East Meon

Image scanned from the Batsford Colour Book of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight by John Norwood, published 1975. The image is by Kenneth Scowen. Circa late 60s, early 70s.

This sweet little village holds considerable charm, with its stream flowing down its high street, a place built with warm old brick and thatch. An ancient Court House of the Bishops of Winchester can be found near All Saints Church with its noble Norman tower. There is one treasure that’s worth a visit inside this Church - the great square font of black Tournai marble, carved with birds and beasts, and two scenes from the story of Adam and Eve.

An ornate pub sign of Saint George on a white horse hangs overhead to the left of the frame against a soft blue sky. The sign reads The George and a quaint village high street scene unfolds below, winding towards a church and a large green hill.
